The Department of Information Technology came into existence in the year 2004 after bifurcation of Division of Computing Sciences. The B.Tech. (Information Technology) programme started in the year 2001 under Division of Computing Sciences. The M.Tech programme on Networking Engineering started in the year 2011. Our Programme had been affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala from the 2001 to the 2014 admissions, and is affiliated to the A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University, Trivandrum, Kerala from the 2015 admissions onwards. The college is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.The Department imparts training in the area of Computer Networks, Network Security, Software engineering, Mobile Computing, database management systems, Information security, Web designing, Bioinformatics ,IoT, Data Mining, Big Data and many ICT related fields. The faculty members are conducting research work in these areas. The UG and PG students are encouraged to take-up projects in the above mentioned fields. The theoretical knowledge of the subjects is enhanced with well equipped laboratories. The course curriculum of the Department is regularly updated from time to time in order to cope up with the upcoming demands of the industry and recent Information Technology developments

The Department had also organized an International Conference on "Advances in Computing and Communications “ together with other Departments(ACC 2011, ACC 2012,ACC 2013,ACC 2014,ACC 2015,ACC 2016,ACC 2017 ) and a National Conference on Education and Research (ConFER 2009) in association with CSI Head Quarters. Department of IT has organized many faculty development programmes and short term training programmes sponsored by different public sector and private sector organizations.

Periodic guest lectures and workshops are conducted for the students to supplement their curriculum. This facilitates our students to update their knowledge on par with the industry standards. The Department has produced many University Ranks in the MG University, Kottayam, Kerala.

The Department has identified the key research areas as Computational data science, Distributed computing and systems,Networks and Data security. Forum for Distributed & Parallel Processing with membership from faculty and students of IT Department has been formed to create a platform for enabling all the members to meet, share, discuss, work on projects, do research and develop Distributed & Parallel Processing Expertise. Faculty members are encouraged to participate in the Faculty Development Programs, Workshops and Seminars arranged by other institutions and leading software industries in their own research area as a step towards strengthening their domain knowledge.

The prospective aim of the department is to enhance and strengthen research activities from UG to PG level.

Vision: To evolve into a department of excellence in information technology by the creation and exchange of knowledge through leading edge research, innovation and services, which will in turn contribute towards solving complex societal problems and thus building a peaceful and prosperous mankind.

Mission: To impart high quality technical education, research training, professionalism and strong ethical values in the young minds for ensuring their productive careers in industry and academia so as to work with a commitment to the betterment of mankind.

Program Educational Objectives (PEO)
Graduates of Information Technology program shall
PEO 1: Have strong technical foundation for successful professional careers and to evolve as key-players/ entrepreneurs in the field of information technology.
PEO 2: Excel in analyzing, formulating and solving engineering problems to promote life-long learning, to develop applications, resulting in the betterment of the society.
PEO 3: Have leadership skills and awareness on professional ethics and codes.

Program Outcomes (PO)
Information Technology Program Students will be able to:
PO 1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering
fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PO 2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
PO 3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
PO 4.Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
PO 5.Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
PO 6.The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
PO 7.Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
PO 8.Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
PO 9.Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
PO 10.Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
PO 11.Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
PO 12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

Program Specific Outcomes(PSO)
Information Technology Program Students will be able to:
PSO1: Acquire skills to design, analyse and develop algorithms and implement them using high-levelprogramming languages.
PSO2: Contribute their engineering skills in computing and information engineering domains like network design and administration, database design and knowledge engineering.
PSO3: Develop strong skills in systematic planning, developing, testing implementing and providing IT solutions for different domains which helps in the betterment of life.
