DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS

Innovations in Teaching and Learning process:

With advent in technologies in the field of civil engineering, it is important for the graduate as well as the faculty to be equipped and well updated of these the state-of-the-art methods in the field. Following activities are done by the faculty members to improve the teaching learning process:

  • Domains pecific faculty development programs/short-term courses/workshops/online MOOC courses were identified and attended by faculty. These courses provided an opportunity to acquire knowledge about current technological developments in relevant fields and enhance the teaching and technical skills of the faculty which in turn improved the teaching and learning process.
  • Faculty members are not only limited to use traditional chalk and blackboard teaching method but also the modern techniques viz-a-viz; power point presentation (Microsoft Office Suite™), audio-visual teaching aids, and self-developed videos for laboratory experiments.
  • Faculty members are having their own YouTube™ channels exclusively for academic activities and dissemination of syllabus coverage.
  • Faculty members provide quality study materials via e-mail, hand-outs, Virtual teaching aids such as JAM Board & Google Classroom (Google Suite™) etc. to enrich the academic environment of students.
  • The course file including syllabus, lecture plan, tutorial plan, evaluation scheme etc. are provided to the students by the subject teacher well in advance of the commencement of the class.
  • Faculty members are encouraged to sign up NPTEL classes, related to subjects concerned to enrich their knowledge base about the subject.
  • Central Computing Facility in the college is used for the access to the internet to acquire the relevant knowledge.
  • Faculty have completed online certification courses by NPTEL and utilised the experience in teaching and learning process
  • In addition to the curriculum an Applied Engineering Mechanics laboratory was established by the faculty members for explaining the fundamental concepts to the first-year students.
  • Department also conducts Expert lectures, delivered by industry persons to enrich the knowledge base of the faculty about the technology used in the industry.
  • Faculty members take initiative or organize various technical events such as National/International Conferences, aptitude test, personal Interview, Group discussion, debate, Industrial visits etc., under Civil Engineering Department Association (NIRMAANA) for the overall development of teaching and learning process. Further, teachers are encouraged to prepare journal papers from student projects and research project proposals (DST/SERB/KSCSTE) for external/internal funding.
  • Faculty members got research funding from KSCSTE, Kerala Govt and RSET IEDC Student innovation grant for conducting project works.
  • Department faculty have undertaken collaborative projects with KMRL, Kochi; and STEAG Centre for Smart City Technologies India Pvt Ltd.
  • Department faculty have grouped in different research areas with respect to their specialization for effective project guidance by mapping all projects to specific research groups comprising of experts in the domain. The following research groups were identified: Structural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering/Hydrology, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.
  • Department faculty have collaborated with Irrigation Department, Government of Kerala to a project titled, 'Abatement of Polluted Stretch of River Chithrappuzha from Karingachira to Irumbanam' and submitted DPR to Water Resources Department, Govt of Kerala.
  • In the academic year 2020-21, Dept of Civil Engineering has organized a Global FDP on "Recent Research Developments in Geotechnical and Geological Engineering", with resource persons from Universities/R&D organizations/Industries such as Michigan Technological University USA, Shell Aberdeen, UK, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, BARC Mumbai etc.
