  1. Why Applied Electronics and Instrumentation?

  2. Applied Electronics emphasizes applying the knowledge, both theory and practicals of Electronics and Instrumentation to achieve solutions to real world problems. Students will gain expertise in practical implementation of various fundamental principles of electronics and its methods. They will learn about commercial and industrial devices such as Microprocessors, Microcontrollers and Electronic Instruments that can be used for measurement and control.  They also learn about Programmable Logic Controllers, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, and Distributed Control Systems which are capable of running industrial production systems that are spread over large geographical distances. They will become familiarized with Automation, Virtual Instrumentation with LabVIEW and many modern developments such as Internet Of Things. Thus they acquire employability skills that are essential for modern industries.

  3. Why Applied Electronics & Instrumentation at Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology?

  4. The programme, Applied Electronics & Instrumentation (AE) at Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology (RSET), has been introduced since RSET’s beginning in 2001. Since then the department and its facilities have grown manifold. The faculty and technical staff are well experienced with research, industrial and teaching backgrounds. The laboratory facilities are at par with industry standards.  Hence the students have an opportunity to get exposed to industrial level automation. Also beyond curricular short term courses augment their learning experience. The department also offers additional exposure to emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Robotics and Smart Automation.  Also the alumni are spread across the globe in good positions in industry and academia, which is a testimony to the curricular/co-curricular activities of the programme.

  5. What are the career opportunities one get by choosing an AE branch?

An instrumentation graduate engineer has the scope of getting a job related to electrical, mechanical, electronics and software sectors due to the multidisciplinary nature of the branch of study.  Hence, an AE engineer can quickly learn and adapt to many fields of engineering. He or she can design, develop, install and manage equipment that are used for measurements, monitoring and control aspects of machinery in a production line.

    Our past statistics show that many students get opportunities in the area of automation, covering vast domains like petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, automotive sector, logistics sector and so on.

    Students choosing software engineering path is also quite common.

    The coolest part is that many students go for higher education and is now working in exciting fields like Aerospace, VLSI, Computer Graphics, Design and Verification, Autonomous Navigation, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, IOT and so on.

  7. What is the scope of Instrumentation Engineer in India and Abroad?

  8. There is a wide range of scope for instrumentation engineers. The graduates work in various sectors like oil and gas, petrochemical and automobile industries. A variety of roles can be played by them, which includes maintenance engineer, reliability engineer, project engineer and design engineer. They can also work in other related areas like installation and commissioning, planning, estimation, services, marketing & sales.

    Some of the Indian companies which recruit instrumentation engineering graduates are Indian Oil Corporation, HPCL, Reliance Industries Limited, and ONGC among many others. One can also enter the process automation industry. Other options are the Research and Development (R&D) organizations such as DRDO and ISRO among others, where you may have to pursue further higher education in some relevant disciplines in engineering, down the line.

    There is a huge scope for instrumentation engineers abroad. They can get into different sectors like petroleum, chemical and steel industries. Opportunities abound in companies involved in manufacturing PLC, SCADA and DCS. Some such companies are Honeywell, Yokogawa and Siemens. In the Middle Eastern countries like UAE, Qatar and other places, there are plenty of opportunities in Oil and Gas industries. Other good countries to go abroad are the European countries, the USA as well as Canada, since they offer great growth opportunities for these engineers.

  9. What additional skills do you learn, other than core subjects when choosing AE Branch at Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology?

  10.  Department of AE, RSET includes highly qualified (with PhD) and experienced faculty, with many years of experience in academics, research and related industries. Also the department has staff with long years of prior industrial experience.

    So the students get an opportunity to learn cutting edge/state of the art technology in the campus. The college’s Fab Lab facility and infrastructure is accessible to all students.  It also has a High Performance Computing Lab.

    RSET also has industry institute partnership with many Organizations where students normally get opportunities to do internship.

    AE department of RSET also encourages students to be members of sports clubs, arts clubs, department association and other professional bodies like IEEE, ISOI and ISA.  It promotes a lot of extracurricular activities like tech fests and arts festivals. The department also encourages students to attend and present papers in technical conferences.  Student exchange programs with foreign universities are also provided.

    Thus students get plenty of opportunities to develop skills in the areas of technical problem solving, interpersonal communication, management and professional development.

  11. What are the options for higher studies after AE engineering?

Some major areas for higher studies include Microelectronics, VLSI and Embedded Systems, Instrumentation Engineering, Signal Processing, Process Control and Instrumentation, Power Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, Bioelectronics and Instrumentation, Bio-Medical Signal Processing & Instrumentation, Control Systems and Instrumentation, Robotics and Automation, Mechatronics etc.

  13. Are there opportunities for higher studies abroad in advanced countries after graduating in AE?

  14. Students can pursue their higher studies in a wide variety of areas related to Electronics, Signal Processing and also Instrumentation and Control, abroad. They may either pursue a Master’s degree and take up a career in industry or do a Master’s degree followed by a PhD and take up a career in academia or industry. There are many AE graduates from RSET who have pursued such a career path.  Those interested in pursuing an MBA abroad may also get opportunities, but usually need a few years of Industry experience before getting admitted in the MBA program.

  15. How does Applied Electronics and Instrumentation programme compare with other branches of Engineering?

  16. At present, large scale on campus placements take place in the IT sector, but the best recruitments in the core domains take place in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). The opportunities in PSUs are on a smaller scale but with much higher remuneration.

    The scope in core engineering domains can be assessed by the statistics on annual recruitment in PSUs in a particular branch compared against the number of candidates graduating per year in that particular branch.

    The following table provides a sample calculation for assessing the scope of Instrumentation in the core domain, with respect to a notification from a public sector unit in 2021 and the number of students appearing for GATE (which can represent the volume of candidates from a branch in a particular year).
